‘Wood Lands’
“My work is concerned with our natural world, affected by dreams. Idyllic, simplistic, plastic, decorative in colorful dynamism. Short stories told in a voice of spatial experiments, motifs, and natural forms. Each print, an organic and geometric exploration of space and the ways our world can live on a flat paper.
Inspiration -
I have been working as an artist for 2 decades and have developed a visual language to express my ideas. My work is informed by many influences: Spatial experiments, Chinese and Japanese Landscape painting, Expressionism, Pre-Colombian art, Folk Art, Decorative art, the Northern and Southwest US landscape, creation myths, ancient artworks, and the woodcut through history. I enjoy experimenting with color as well, an exploration that yields unique palettes to each print as each layer is hand inked.
Methods/Techniques -
The images provided here were created by hand carving woodblocks, hand inking, and individually pressing. Each print in an edition is unique because of this handiwork, as well as the variety of ink color. Most of the images presented here were created using a reduction process, in which 1 block is carved and printed repetitively to build the color layers. Once an edition is finished, only the last layer is left on the block and therefore cannot be recreated. In these multiple layers you will notice split-fountain (rainbow roll/hombre) inking, marbling, and texture building techniques. Other works presented here are stark, singular color woodcut prints.”
